So these are actually valentines. I make valentines, or try to, every year. This year they came out a little demented. Have a look.

Bedbugs (A Dirge)

The closest I've ever come to truly losing my mind was a couple of months ago when I moved to Brooklyn.

You see, there's a bedbug epidemic in New York.

I'm fairly accustomed to dragging in random things off the street.

It's kind of a hobby. Many of my favorite possessions over the years have accumulated from trash.

Trash, sitting in piles on the streets, for all to see, is even more enticing...

A lamp here, a desk there....

What a nice end table!

So the collecting went on, until my veteran roommate (12 years or so) inquired as to where I was finding such nice furnishings...

But I cleaned everything!?!

Didn't matter. They live in the walls, he said. In your baseboards. In wood.

On your mattress. In your boxspring. Your pillowcases. Everywhere.

So then, we had bedbugs.

A rolly-polly: that was actually a bedbug.

Simple ant? Nope, bedbug. Speck of dirt? Piece of lint? Bedbug again.

Any minute thing I saw, inside or outside of the house, near or far from my bed,

transformed into a bedbug.

This mania became so severe that psychosis overtook my physical being.

I was always itching. I slept little.

I examined and scrubbed and bleached and poisoned everything in sight.

I started to see things move.

I lost my mind.

Google, wikipedia, and so forth certainly didn't help. As they don't.

In trying to educate myself, the obsession became another beast.

More and more images, each slightly different, amassed in my mind; each

expanding the already infinite possibility of a bedbug infestation;

and each confirming the impossibility of extinguishing it.

RADAR EYES, an exhibition of hallucinogenic prints curated by Canadian printmaking duo Seripop, Chicago gallerist Reuben Kinkaid, and The Space L.I.C. will open Friday, November 6th, 7pm at Fardom Gallery, 25-17 41st Avenue, Long Island City. Around the corner, a secret space will stash many more prints and a new installation by NYC artist Sakura Maku. Gallery goers will enjoy an exciting dual-opening of hundreds of works evoking altered states, perpetual distortions, and outright hallucinations.

Including works by Le Dernier Cri (Marseilles, France), Xander Marro and Lief Goldberg (Providence, RI), Dutch Illustrator Zeloot, Minneapolis-based Danimal, and Seripop (Montreal), this show offers a mind-expanding aesthetic experience for all.
RADAR EYES debuted in 2008 at the Co-Prosperity Sphere (Chicago), home of the Public Media Institute. RADAR EYES will travel to Glasgow, U.K. early spring of 2010. This edition of the exhibition was made possible by NYC artist's collaborative The Space, which has been dedicated to the use of underutilized properties in the name of art since 2001.

All Hail the Rat King

The Rat King is a cryptozoological phenomenon that occurs when a group of rats become permanently bound to one another by knotted tails, excrement, and hair. The rats thus move and function as one entity. While biologists generally believe the Rat King to be little more than Germanic folklore, specimens of dead Rat Kings are housed in museums throughout northern Europe, the largest of which contains 27 rats.

I find even the possibility of a Rat King's existence very disturbing. An entangled entity, thirsting for survival speaks somehow of life, but also morbidly and deeply about death. I'd imagine that as some of the rats die, the others continue along their way, eating the remains of their fallen partners, with whom they once worked together. The Rat King symbolizes Hell: tortured and bound, living but in pain and suffering.

In the life quotidian, it speaks to population density and other urban phenomenon, as the rat is ever present in cities, being particularly associated with the US mecca and benchmark, New York. Here, I can almost imagine the people becoming matted together with their- or rather, our- own mess, forcing some sort of togetherness, as we individually bulldoze our way toward sustenance, comfort, and- of course- the finer things in life.

THE WORK:
Of the ones that weren't obvious big name artists- and what was left by noon on Saturday- I thought these were particularly stunning.

Line work. The one on the left is a disfigured/deconstructed US. Black hole in the middle, ripped paper. More spindly stuff on the right

The one on the left used pen under resin, making the ink bleed when it was coated. Delicious. The middle one screams Rio. A painting? Dynamite. All the way to the right is a bark-cloth looking thing.

Color scheme/line heavy abstracts frame a layered & cut acrylic piece.

This is a new, very detailed line drawing I've just completed titled "Green Integral"; I've started a Violet version as well. Medium is ink on gessoed paper. Size is 11" x 11". Small but seductive.

Macro detail: I used Le Pens, Staedtler Triplus Fineliners, third-rate gel ink pens from Staples, and Farb-Riese colored pencils (the new jam).

Zoom in: Truly, one would go at least cross-eyed, if not insane from having to sit still for this long. It required listening to the same Cut Copy and Lindstrøm tracks more times than I'm inclined to admit. Black coffee, Euro/Austro trash, art or bust.

Wallpaper view: If you unraveled all of the line and placed it end-to-end, it would cross Manhattan (or some other less-significant, smallish island) 7 times. [citation needed]

Works in Progress:: Back to Bright

Here are some clips from some paintings I'm working on while in New York. They're all unfinished. Media- mixed as always- include oil, watercolor, gouache, white out and metallic leafing.

The brushstrokes are thick and quick on this one. It's taking forever to oxidize.

The really wet spot on this one is a lacquer and the dry spots are oil with impasto. I love me some resin.

Actually sideways, this image and the following are from the same work. It's not as bubblegum pink as it's looking here... and it's still looking flat; I'm planning on building up to an obnoxious level.

Oils are a new medium for me & I'm obsessed with the transparency and depth one can easily create....

I visited the lovely Tommy Walton's fabulous accessory design class last week. Here are some of the samples I showed the students to get their brains going on using their own textiles:

This technique is Arashi Shibori on very porous, crisp organiza silk. The stripes are achieved by folding and wrapping the fabric around pvc piping and binding it down with twine of the desired thickness. I learned this from the incredible Akemi Cohn who teaches at Lill Street Art Center in Chicago.

This piece is more traditional tie dye on muslin. I used common household dye and metallic gouaches to achieve the variety in richness and opacity. This obviously wouldn't work for clothes, but is fine for mixed media work. The embellishment is hundreds of glass pearls, all hand sewn. The weight of the pearls on the light fabric drastically changes the drape- an interesting fact that can be manipulated to incorporate into an inventive garment's construction.

I have a long awaited show opening May 23rd. And I know not what I do.

Part 2: Why.
I´m interested in decoration, partially because it is somewhere between the abstract and representational, but also because it surrounds us everywhere in the human world: a home, an outfit, a restaruant, a dorm room, a cubicle. Decoration provides personality, comfort, comunication of ideals, aspirations, social mores.

It also falls somwhere between design and chaos, and can be on either end of that spectrum. Design may work off of intuition, but is ultimately pre ordaned. Chaos has it´s own order too, but in this case works intuitively and a spiraling response to previous motions to create it.

I am an artist versus an interior decorator or a designer because I am interested in bending how decoration functions. I still want it to be pleasing, as all is in some sense, but I also want it to be confusing, unorthodox, even psychedelic. If the aim is to create beauty or aesthetic pleasure, I want my work to do this somewhere between intellectualism and hedonism: amusement of the senses as the initial, an examination of why and how shortly afterward.

I don´t use space age materials, but rather one of the oldest homes of decoration: fabric. I most often use old techniques: binding, tying, sewing, dying have been done for thousands of years. So has painting, and I´m certainly not the first artist to throw paint on a canvas (bound or otherwise) and call it a day. Firstly, my approach is somewhat that of an outsider, as I know more about design princeples than conceptual art. Coming out of this is a proud irreverence for well studied techniques: embroidery, shibori. I am free to use them as I please.

I nthe age of the machine.... meaning the computer.... there is still the craft of doing something for its sake and doing it well. These archaic arts (hand rendering anything that, to be considered well done, commands a mathematical, dictated attention to order and detail) are beautiful and beautifull for their own sake. But what beyond.

Like the expressionist temporarily throwing linear perspectives out the door, I say damn the correct way. Skills will come to me, like all others, who work and study, but later in life because for now I will use and basterdize any and every craft I feel necessary to accomplish and acertain a single goal: Decorative Abstraction.
